Connected to Eduroam network to facilitate international mobility for students and researchers

20 November 2014

Since last September the internet connection provided by EADA goes beyond conventional WiFi Access. Thanks to the school’s recent incorporation on the Eduroam global mobility Project, the students and researchers of the EADA community who visit other institutions that adhere to Eduroam around the world as well as those who visit our business school will have high quality internet Access without the need to use cables.

The main advantage of this network, with its 12,000 access points around the world is the mobility it provides to research staff and students internationally, offering them the same connection quality and speed that they enjoy in their home countries. According to Marco A. Peña, director of Information Technology at EADA, “this is an important aspect because it helps visiting professors and students to adapt to our environment since many of them already have Access to Eduroam on arrival at EADA”.

In addition to this, the connection offers users added security and reliability: the login and username they must enter are the same as those they use in their institution back home. What’s more, in some places that adhere to Eduroam, visitors can also access other resources such as printers without needing to use an additional code. According to Peña “they don’t have to configure the new computer or mobile device and users can work on a network that offers top security”.

At EADA the Eduroam service is available through over 50 access points. These provide coverage throughout all the Barcelona campus, including classrooms, study rooms and offices and on the Collbató campus where it is also available in outdoor areas and in the residential center.

Connected to the Anella Científica (ATM Ring)

EADA’s adhesion to the Eduroam global mobility project came two year after its connection to the Anella Científica, the asynchronous transfer mode communications network that provides advanced services (super-computation, e-administration, repositories…) and high capacity connectivity to 89 institutions linked to the R&D world in Catalonia.

Thanks to the agreement signed with this network, EADA was able to increase its global connection capacity 14 times, improve voice and data transmission between the Barcelona and Collbató campuses as well as offer new services and improve on the quality of existing ones (virtual campus, WiFi network…).
